What exactly is one-pot pasta?
One-pot pasta will become your new favorite weeknight meal. There are so many delicious varieties (see a roundup of our favorites here) and it is so simple to make.
In essence, you’re cooking everything in one pot. That means you won’t have to spend time boiling your pasta before making your sauce. Not only is it more flavorful, but it also takes much less time! Win win!

- 2-3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, diced into bite-size chunks

Firstly a good homemade marinara sauce, and secondly good Italian dressing
to make this good chicken pasta! The marinara sauce is made out of extra virgin olive oil, onion, tomatoes, salt and pepper, chili, bay leaf and tomato paste.

How To Make Chicken Parmesan Pasta (One Pot)?
- Add a drizzle of olive oil to a large pot or skillet (I used my dutch oven) and heat over MED-HIGH heat. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Cook for 5 minutes, or until the chicken is mostly cooked through. Transfer to a plate.
- Cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until the onion and garlic are soft. Pour in the marinara sauce, then fill the empty sauce jar halfway with water and add it to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a low heat.
- Stir in the chicken and pasta, then cover and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the pasta is cooked to your liking. Mix in the parmesan and 1/4 cup of the mozzarella cheese.
- Cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until the remaining 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese is melted and gooey on top of the dish.
- If desired, top with more Italian seasoning and garnish with parsley or basil.
Pairing options for chicken parmesan:
When it comes to this recipe, you can pretty much use whatever you want as a side. Salad, vegetables, etc. all work. Garlic Sesame Green Beans and Maple Balsamic Brussels Sprouts, as well as Cranberry Quinoa Salad and Zucchini Noodle Caprese Salad, are excellent choices!
How Can I Customize One Pot Chicken Parmesan Pasta?
If you want to customize this dish to your liking, try:
- You’ve never had marinara sauce like this before. Perhaps you prefer a vodka sauce, Alfredo, or a spicy variety.
- Before adding the cheese to melt in step 5, add cooked broccoli or cauliflower to the dish. That right there is an all-in-one dish!
- Chicken sausage can be used in place of chicken breasts. Cook the sausage directly from the casings, or slice it into 1-inch rounds and cook as directed in steps 1 and 3.
- Make your pasta dish spicy by adding spicy sauce, red pepper flakes, or hot sauce while cooking or right before serving, or all of the above!
- Use a variety of cheeses, or substitute parmesan for asiago.
- Feel free to use up whatever cheese you have on hand!
- To make this meal vegetarian, substitute chickpeas or another white bean for the chicken. Step 3 involves simply adding them to the dish.
Storing Leftovers
Are you prepared to store your leftovers? It’s simple! Depending on when you intend to use them, you can keep them in the fridge or freezer.
Freezer:
I recommend freezing the chicken separately from the rest of the ingredients. If freezing, omit the cheese and replace it with fresh before serving. Within 3-4 months, enjoy.
Refrigerator:
Chicken parmesan can be kept in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. It’s fine to store everything in one container for this method — just make sure it’s securely sealed! I suggest reheating in the oven.
Have any leftovers?
This can be safely stored in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. We recommend adding a splash of water when reheating pasta to help rehydrate the mixture.
Feel free to microwave this straight from the fridge or toss the pasta into a pot to heat on the stove.
To make reheating leftovers easier, place them in the fridge the day before you plan to eat them. You can microwave it straight from the freezer, but it will take a little longer.
If you go this route (straight from the freezer to the microwave), heat it in rounds, mixing every minute and a half. This ensures that the dish reheats evenly.
Suggestions for Serving
With this delicious Chicken Parmesan Pasta Recipe, you don’t even need a side dish. One-pot meals are fantastic in this manner!
I typically serve it with crusty garlic bread and call it a day. Oh, and wine–you can’t forget the wine! Wine and pasta are an excellent combination for making a simple dinner feel special.
This one-pot chicken pasta dish has simple ingredients but a lot of flavor and cheese. The ideal combination. I’m confident you’ll enjoy this one!
Notes:
- If you prefer, you could make this dish with other types of pasta, such as penne.
- If you don’t have a large skillet, a stock pot will suffice.
- The outer layer of pasta will be slightly toastier, but the rest will be perfectly soft and tender.
- To make the cheese on top extra melty (yum!) Simply place the skillet on the broiler for 3-4 minutes.
What Kind Of Pot Works Best For Pasta?
Because this is a one-pot dish (no straining required), you don’t need to use a pot with a strainer. I like to use a medium-sized pasta pot (it’s just easier to get down in it for stirring if it’s not too high on the sides), but a deep skillet would also work.
You could also use a Dutch oven or any larger, deeper pot that has a lid (for smothering that cheese and making it all gooey and melty).
Can I make this pasta dish gluten free?
Absolutely! Depending on the type of gluten free pasta you use, you may need to adjust the amount of liquid and the cooking time.
Gluten-free pasta (particularly spaghetti) is a little more delicate than regular pasta. As a result, we recommend starting with 3 1/4 cup chicken stock and gently stirring a couple more times while it cooks. This will keep it from sticking together and tearing apart.
At the 8-minute mark, taste test a noodle for texture. If your pasta is still chewy or undercooked, add an additional 1/2 cup stock.
What Is A Good Pasta Side?
Now that you’re all set to make this easy chicken parmesan pasta dish, let’s talk about my second favorite dinner dish: sides!
- Salads go well with pasta, so why not make one? You are not required to use a recipe, though I have a few suggestions. Use whatever lettuce or greens you have on hand, as well as a few other vegetable (or fruit) toppings and your favorite dressing (or make a simple one with olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper).
- Garlic bread is a must-have in this house. It’s as if you can’t eat pasta without it. I must say that I agree with almost all of them.
- Roast some asparagus on the side for a quick and healthy side dish.
- Are you not a fan of asparagus? How about some cheesy roasted green beans?
- Better yet, while Brussels sprouts are usually the underdog, I’ve found that after trying my version with parmesan and balsamic vinegar, most people become fans.
- If you don’t want garlic bread but still want a bread side, try a baguette, French bread, or even homemade dinner rolls.
