How Long Can Milk Sit Out?

Have you ever left milk on the counter by accident and wondered whether it was okay to return it to the fridge or drink it? We all know that dairy products should be kept cool, but how quickly should milk be refrigerated to stay safe?

I had a hectic morning the other day. I awoke, dressed, ate breakfast, packed my lunch, and was about to go for work when I noticed something unusual: the container of milk was out on the counter. I didn’t know how long it had been sitting there. This made me wonder how long milk can be left out for.

How Long Can Milk Be Left Out?

In a moderately cool area, you can leave milk on the counter for up to two hours, or an hour in a room with temps exceeding 90 degrees F. If you leave it any longer, bacteria will have spread throughout the milk, making it dangerous to drink.

Many people leave milk out for more than two hours before drinking it, with no negative consequences. However, it is still not a good idea to do so, particularly if you are vulnerable. Even if it does not make you sick, milk that has been left out will get sour faster. This contributes to food waste and is inconvenient.

Is the shelf life of all varieties of milk the same?

You should know the type of milk you have before determining whether it has gone sour. The shelf life of each variety of milk is variable.

Reduced-fat and skimmed milk, for example, are known to last for seven days.

Whole milk, on the other hand, can get sour in as little as 5 days. Nonfat milk and lactose-free milk, on the other hand, have a shelf life of about 10 days.

Where should milk be kept in the refrigerator?

Pasteurized milk is prevalent in the United States, unlike in France, Spain, and other European countries where drinking ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk is the standard. Pasteurized milk must be refrigerated, according to the FDA. According to a food safety specialist from Clemson University, Grade-A milk should be kept at a temperature of at least 45°F. To obtain the greatest results, keep the milk on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator. This is because the California Dairy Council refers to it as the coolest part of your fridge.

How long can you keep milk that hasn’t been opened?

According to the FDA, you should never leave unopened milk out at room temperature for more than two hours. As the temperature rises, however, this window shrinks.

When the temperature rises over 45°F, unopened milk can last for up to an hour.

When it comes to milk, what temperature should it be kept at?

To prevent bacteria from spreading, milk should be kept below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This is why it needs to be kept in the refrigerator. To extend its life, it should be kept in the coldest region of your refrigerator.

Most people keep their milk in the refrigerator door for easy access, however this is not the greatest position to keep milk. Milk, on the other hand, should be stored as near the bottom of the fridge as feasible in most refrigerators. This is frequently the coldest area because cold air sinks. If your fridge has an ice-making chamber at the top, it’s best to keep the milk next to it because it’ll be cooler. The cooler your milk is kept, the longer it will last.

Is there any milk that will keep for a month or more?

Yes, UHT milk, commonly known as long-life milk or shelf-stable milk, is suitable for this purpose. This milk is heated for 2-4 seconds at extraordinarily high temperatures (275°F) and comes in unusual packaging. It can be stored at room temperature for up to six months if not opened.

However, don’t hold your breath for any miracles after it’s unlocked. It has the same shelf life as regular milk once it’s been opened.

What is the maximum amount of time breast milk can be left out?

Breast milk must be refrigerated as soon as possible. This milk can be kept out at room temperature for approximately four hours at 77°F, according to authorities.

Is it necessary to keep pasteurized milk refrigerated?

Pasteurized milk, as well as UHT milk that has been opened, must be kept refrigerated. UHT milk has been heated to the point that it can be safely stored at room temperature until it is opened, but it must be refrigerated once opened, just like regular milk.

Unless the label specifies otherwise, milk purchased in supermarkets is always pasteurized. This is done to kill microorganisms and make the milk more palatable. It does not, however, imply that you should keep it on the counter.

How long will raw milk keep in the fridge?

Raw milk can be kept at 36-38°F for 7-10 days if stored properly. Higher temperatures cause lactobacilli to create lactic acid, which is why spoilt milk has a tangy flavor.

Why does organic milk have such a long shelf life?

You may have noticed that many “Organic” milk cartons have a longer shelf life than “normal” milk cartons, sometimes up to a month. But its shelf life isn’t due to the label; the pasteurizing technique is known as UHT, or ultra-high temperature processing.

According to Scientific American, non-organic milk is pasteurized, which does not destroy all of the microorganisms as effectively as UHT.

How Can You Tell If Milk Is Bad?

When milk goes bad, it emits a sour, unpleasant odor that can be quite unpleasant. If you’re still not sure, lumpiness and a sour flavor are two further symptoms to check for.

If you’re not sure if some milk has gone bad, pour it into a cup and inspect it. Milk with a slightly dark tint, mold specks on the surface, or lumps in it is usually bad. It may have also divided a little.

It is important to note that it does not have to exhibit all of these symptoms to be off, although it will almost always taste terrible. If you’re not sure, try a tiny quantity without adding it to a drink so you can test it properly without being distracted by other flavors.

If in doubt, throw the milk away rather than drink it; however, it is typically very easy to detect when milk is no longer safe to ingest.

Last Thoughts

Milk should not be left out on the counter for more than two hours, or an hour if it is hot outside. When you stop using milk, immediately place it in the fridge and store it in the main body of the refrigerator rather than the door. This will help to keep the temperature down and prevent bacteria from spreading.
