how long to bake salmon at 450 – Salmon was by far the most popular fish that you all wanted to learn about when I accepted requests for this series. With good reason: it’s a delicious, economical, easy-to-find fish that’s high in protein, omega-3s, and other beneficial nutrients, and it goes well with a range of seasonings and sauces.
It’s also really simple to bake salmon in the oven, which is my preferred method of preparation. So, since I’ve already shared two recipes for baked salmon wrapped in foil on the site (for honey mustard and garlic lovers), I figured we could go back to basics today and discuss how to create classic baked salmon filets on our own. Your salmon can be flawlessly crispy on the outside and moist, delicate, and flaky on the inside with a few simple steps. Then it’s up to you whether you want to serve it simple or with your favorite sauces or seasonings. It’s quite simple, believe me.

HOW TO BAKE SALMON:
- Let’s speak about how to prepare fish. To roast salmon in the oven, simply follow these steps:
- Allow the salmon to come to room temperature before serving. Allow your salmon filets to rest on the counter for 15-30 minutes, or until they’ve (almost) reached room temperature. Cooking will be more even as a result of this.
- Season the fish with salt and pepper. Using paper towels, blot the salmon dry on all sides. Then, skin-side down, lay the salmon on a foil-lined baking sheet (or in an oven-proof, non-stick skillet, such as a cast iron pan). If the salmon filets’ ends are very thin, tuck them under a little to ensure equal cooking. Apply oil to all sides (excluding the bottom). Season to taste with dry seasonings. (I enjoy a good pun.)
- Bake. Then bake at 450°F until the salmon achieves an internal temperature of 140°F* (or 135°F*, as I like), about 4-6 minutes per half inch of thickness. Insert a fork or knife into the salmon and twist it a little to see whether it’s done; the fish should be opaque and flake readily.
- Place the salmon on a platter that has been cleaned. Remove the salmon from the oven and place it on a clean serving platter. Then, squeeze a fair amount of lemon juice over each filet, season with fresh herbs if desired, and then…
Warm it up before serving! Also, have fun!
INGREDIENTS
To make this delicious salmon recipe, you’ll only need a few simple ingredients. The recipe card below has the exact measurements. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll require:
Salmon fillets with the skin on: I prefer skin-on fillets. The nicest feature, in my opinion, is the skin!
Avocado oil: I like olive oil, but if you prefer an oil with a higher smoke point, try avocado oil instead.
Salt and pepper, kosher and black: If using fine salt, lower the amount you use otherwise the dish will be overly salty.
Garlic powder and dried thyme: In this recipe, I prefer to use garlic powder instead of fresh minced garlic because it coats the fish better.
SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS
This dish is one of my favorites, and I almost always make it exactly as instructed. However, if you want to change up the fundamental recipe, here are some suggestions:
Instead of using olive oil, brush the fish with melted butter.
The spices you use can be changed up. Consider incorporating onion powder and paprika in addition to garlic and thyme.
I occasionally serve the salmon with lemon wedges so that diners can squeeze some lemon juice over their meal.
