how to cook frozen chicken breast?- Weeknight meals have never been easier. When you’re short on time, there’s no need to defrost frozen chicken breasts. Here’s how to cook frozen chicken breasts. Yes, straight from the freezer!

Surprisingly, one of the most popular blog entries on our website is one with directions for cooking frozen salmon. That was a game changer for me. I had never considered cooking frozen fish until I was approached by a firm that wanted me to try it. It was such an effective and convenient procedure that I now keep frozen fish fillets in the freezer, ready to bake for a quick meal.

how to cook frozen chicken breast?

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F or higher. When breading, like in the recipe below, I use a higher temperature to help brown the crumbs.
  2. Place the frozen chicken breasts in a single layer on a baking sheet. It is preferable to use a broiling pan or a rack over a foil-lined pan. This prevents any liquid from the chicken breast from leaking out and steaming them. But, because I’m lazy, I normally simply use a standard sheet pan. Mine is a pretty fantastic heavy-duty one that works wonderfully and is ideal if you’re performing high-temperature work, which I frequently do.
  3. Make them better! Season with salt, pepper, and whatever else you prefer.
  4. If you wish to add a sauce (such as BBQ sauce), wait until the last 10-15 minutes of cooking time.
  5. See the recipe below for breading instructions. But, in general, I coat them with mustard and then sprinkle on some bread crumbs combined with a little oil to assist the browning process. I use mustard because it’s quicker to brush on and have the bread crumbs attach to frozen chicken breasts than it is to dredge them in flour and then egg wash them. This is a really straightforward solution.
  6. Bake the chicken breasts for half the time they would typically take. Unfrozen chicken breasts of average size (5-7 ounces) normally need 20-30 minutes at 350°F. So you’re looking at 30-45 minutes for frozen chicken.
  7. The oven temperature must be raised if you are breading, as I have done in the recipe below. However, it will take approximately the same length of time.
  8. When you believe the chicken breasts are done, use an instant-read thermometer to confirm. The temperature must be at least 165°F. To ensure that they’re finished, a thermometer is the best bet.
  9. However, if you know what you’re doing and have faith in yourself, you can cut into the thickest section of one and ensure that it’s not pink on the inside.
  10. Make preparations to attempt another from-frozen dish once you’ve discovered how simple it is and how tasty the chicken turns out. Here are some of my favorite recipes, including frozen Chicken Parmesan and Chicken Cordon Bleu. Yes, you can prepare those classics and so much more with frozen chicken breasts.

Can You Cook Chicken From Frozen?

Those short dinners made me wonder if I could accomplish the same thing with chicken breast. Is it secure? Yes!

I double-checked with the USDA, and yes, you can cook frozen chicken breasts. There’s no need to stress about supper if you neglected to defrost them ahead of time.

How Long Should Frozen Chicken Breasts Be Cooked?

When cooking frozen chicken, cook it for half the time it would take to prepare unfrozen chicken. At 350°F, an unfrozen chicken breast weighing 5-7 ounces normally takes 20-30 minutes. So, depending on the size of the chicken breast, you’re looking at 30-45 minutes for a frozen chicken breast.

Preparing Chicken Breasts For The Freezer

When you go home from the grocery shop, make sure you pack the chicken breasts neatly. The reason for this is that you can’t cook them with a mountain of frozen breasts in the pan. They will not be cooked uniformly.

When you come home from the shopping store, place your fresh chicken breasts in a single layer in a freezer bag. Place the bag flat in the freezer, leaving room around each breast. You may also freeze them flat on a tray or plate before transferring them to a freezer bag.

Regardless of how you do it, once they’re frozen, jumble them up and place the bag upright in the freezer. The secret is to keep the breasts apart.

The chicken breasts were frozen on a tray before being placed in a freezer bag. Even though they were touching in the bag, you can see that they aren’t truly bonded together.

What are the best methods for cooking frozen chicken?

The best (that is, the only safe) procedures are those that cook the chicken rapidly.

Because you don’t want the chicken to linger at a hazardous internal temperature for too long, the slow cooker is out (sorry, but it’s true).

But don’t be depressed!

We still have plenty of choices for those frozen chicken breasts you forgot to pull out earlier.

It is important to note that for these methods to work, your chicken breasts must be frozen separately rather than in one large lump. If your chicken is frozen together, try dropping it on a hard surface until it separates.

Cooking frozen chicken in the Instant Pot:

Because it’s so simple and quick, this is generally my go-to option!

I already have a comprehensive, extensive post about how I cook frozen chicken breasts in the Instant Pot, as well as one about cooking frozen chicken thighs, so I won’t rehash anything here.

I can assure you that they are juicy and tasty, and that they are ready in around 30 minutes from start to finish!

Can you boil frozen chicken?

Yes (yeah! ), is the quick response.

However, whether you want to depends on how you want to utilize the chicken.

Poached chicken (chicken cooked in liquid) is highly moist and soft, making it ideal for chopping or shredding and adding to a variety of dishes such as pizza, soup, salad, sandwiches, casseroles, and so on.

You should never cook any chicken, frozen or otherwise, quickly. Rather, we want to poach it or gently cook it. Boiling chicken at too high a temperature might result in rubbery chicken, which no one likes!

If you want to roast a chicken breast to eat on its own, I usually choose these Baked Chicken Breasts due to their golden and tasty surface.

If you’re in a hurry and your chicken breasts are frozen, check my baking instructions below.

Boiling frozen chicken:

  • Fill a big saucepan halfway with frozen chicken breasts.
  • Fill the saucepan halfway with cold water, just enough to cover the chicken.
  • Season the water with salt and pepper as required.
  • Bring to a low boil over medium-high heat, then lower to a low simmer, cover, and cook for 12-13 minutes, or until an internal temperature of 165°F is attained.
  • Transfer to a chopping board, cover with plastic wrap, and let aside for 10 minutes before slicing or shredding.
  • Tips and tricks: making soup is one of the greatest ways to use frozen chicken breasts! So you can boil your chicken breasts till soft while retaining all of the chicken taste – it spices your broth! If I’m in a hurry, I’ll create this Chicken Rice Soup or Chicken Noodle Soup with frozen chicken breasts.

Baking frozen chicken breasts:

This month on The Recipe Rebel is all about the ideal Baked Chicken Breast, so I wanted to share my method for baking frozen chicken breasts as well.

If I want it to be well-seasoned and stand alone as our primary protein for the dinner, this is my preferred technique (the Instant Pot method and Boiled method I find better for dishes where the chicken will be shredded).

When I bake frozen chicken breasts, I give them a 20-minute head start in the oven before adding spice or sauce. I find that it adheres better on chicken that hasn’t been frozen solid, and if I use sauce, it doesn’t burn due to the extended cook time.

To bake frozen chicken breasts:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cover with foil and place the chicken breasts in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet or in a big baking dish (you don’t want them touching).

After 20 minutes, remove from the oven and season with salt and pepper, seasoning salt, taco seasoning, or whatever all-purpose seasoning mix you have in your spice cabinet. You may also add sauce or cheese at this time if you like – try barbecue sauce, tomato sauce, honey garlic, or teriyaki sauce.

Return the chicken breast to the oven, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, or until an internal temperature of 165 degrees F is achieved in the thickest portion of the breast.

Remove from the oven, cover with foil, and set aside for 10 minutes before slicing or serving.
