Why You Will Love Instant Pot Chicken Breast?
- It’s simple to make: simply dump, start, and go! Allow the pressure to naturally escape before opening the top, and you’ll have a delicious supper or perfectly cooked chicken for salads and sandwiches all week.
- It’s flexible — as previously said, it’s wonderful cold in sandwiches and salads, but it’s also fantastic tossed into soup, pasta, or any casserole, and it can be simply warmed with a sauce of your choice to make it something new (we are big on reinventing leftovers here)
- It’s healthy – don’t get too worked up over a dab of butter or margarine – our bodies require some fat, and this Instant Pot Chicken Breast is a high protein, low fat, and low calorie complement to any meal.
Ingredients:
- either water or broth
- honey
- Soy sauce
- garlic
- pepper
- chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
- cornstarch
How To Make Instant Pot Chicken Breast?
- Spices – In a small dish, combine the spices and liberally massage the spice mixture on each chicken breast.
- Sear the chicken by heating the olive oil in the Instant Pot on the Sauté setting. Add the chicken breasts to the heated olive oil and sear on all sides.
- You may need to perform this in two batches. Set the chicken aside after removing it from the Instant Pot.
- Cook the chicken — Place the trivet inside the Instant Pot and pour in the chicken broth. Close the Instant Pot cover and place the chicken on top of the trivet. Set the Instant Pot to Manual/High Pressure for 5 minutes after sealing the valve. Allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for 10 minutes before releasing any residual pressure.
- Transfer the chicken to a chopping board or serving plate to serve. Allow 5 minutes for the chicken to rest before slicing or serving.
Tips And Tricks:
- Check that your chicken is done to at least 165 degrees F using an instant read thermometer.
- If your chicken isn’t cooked through after the pressure cook time is up, switch to sauté mode to finish cooking it.
- You may add a bag of frozen mixed veggies to the Instant Pot after stirring in the cornstarch mixture. They’ll be cooking as the sauce thickens.
- To make this dish gluten-free, replace the soy sauce with coconut aminos or gluten-free tamari.
Variations Suggestions:
- Chicken is one of my favorite meats since it can be prepared with so many different spices, herbs, and sauces! To add a fresh twist, experiment with own seasoning blend or a packaged blend you enjoy.
- Easy Instant Pot BBQ Chicken is made by slicing chicken and tossing it with barbecue sauce.
- This spice mix and cooking method work equally well for a combination of breasts and thighs – if you have a chicken thigh fan in the house, put in some boneless, skinless chicken thighs with your breasts and everyone will be pleased!
How Long To Cook Chicken Breast In Instant Pot?
The time it takes to cook chicken in the Instant Pot is determined on the size of the chicken breasts.
For fresh, boneless, skinless chicken breasts, follow these steps:
- Cook small chicken breasts (7-8 ounces each breast) for 8 minutes.
- Cook for 10 minutes medium (10 ounces each breast) chicken breasts.
- Large (12 ounces per breast) chicken breasts should be cooked for 11 minutes.
How To Prepare Gravy?
I genuinely enjoy making gravy with the leftover liquid from the Instant Pot. Trust me, there’s a lot of flavor in there, and it goes great with this chicken breast.
Simply mix a slurry with 2 tbsp. water and 1 tbsp. cornstarch to produce the gravy. Set the Instant Pot to Sauté and bring the remaining liquid to a boil. Whisk in the cornstarch slurry well. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened. That’s it!
Thickening The Sauce In The Instant Pot:
One of my favorite features of this electric pressure cooker is the sauté mode. After the chicken has finished cooking, take it from the cooker and set your Instant Pot to sauté mode. Make a cornstarch slurry by mixing cornstarch and water together. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. This will take around 2 to 3 minutes.
Because the heating element will take a few minutes to cool down, I recommend removing the inner pot from the Instant Pot base once the sauce has thickened. To serve, slice the chicken and mix it into the sauce, or pour the sauce on top.
Can I Use Frozen Chicken Breast?
Yep! One of the nicest things about this Instant Pot chicken breast recipe is that it works just as well with frozen as it does with thawed chicken breasts. It’s a super-fast way to start supper or get a head start on your weekly food planning. Just make sure to separate the chicken breasts before seasoning them, and keep in mind that using frozen chicken breasts may cause the pot to take longer to come to pressure. Otherwise, you’re all set!
How Long Should Frozen Chicken Breast Be Cooked In The Instant Pot?
If your chicken breasts are frozen, add 2-4 minutes to the cook times mentioned above. For frozen chicken breasts, I find that adding 3 minutes to the cooking time is typically sufficient. For frozen chicken, you should also use a 10-minute natural release rather than a fast release.
Is It Okay To Use Bone-In, Skin-On Chicken Breasts?
Absolutely! All you need to do is cook it for a little longer. Continue to sear the breasts in the same manner, but instead of 5 minutes, the chicken will need 10 minutes to cook on high pressure. Continue with the remaining steps as directed.
What Goes With Chicken Breast?
Chicken is very versatile. This dish is wonderful since you can combine it with nearly anything! It may be eaten on its own or with your favorite side dishes. These chicken breasts may be used in a number of dishes, including quesadillas, casseroles, pastas, and more! Here are some sides that I like to serve with these quick pot chicken breasts:
- Cauliflower Mashed in the Instant Pot
- Green Beans and Mushrooms, Roasted
- Salad of Red Potatoes with Garlic and Herbs
- Skillet Potatoes with Thyme
- Salad with avocado and tomatoes
- Roasted Broccoli with Parmesan Topping
- Orzo Creamy Garlic Parmesan
- Macaroni and Cheese in the Instant Pot
How To Keep Leftovers?
Leftover chicken can be refrigerated for up to 4 days if well packed. This is ideal for fast lunches and meals throughout the remainder of the week!
If you want to preserve your chicken for a longer period of time, place it in the freezer in an airtight container, freezer bags, or firmly wrapped in aluminum foil or freezer wrap.
When thawing frozen chicken, it’s best to keep it in the fridge overnight before reheating in the microwave or oven. If you don’t want to use the microwave, bear in mind that when reheating your chicken in the oven, you should keep it covered to prevent it from drying out. Cook the chicken for 10-15 minutes, covered, at 350°F, or until heated through.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups chicken broth (low sodium)
- 4 skinless boneless chicken breasts
- 3/4 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp of salt
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/8 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp. unsalted butter
Instructions
Fill the Instant Pot or pressure cooker halfway with chicken stock. Toss in the chicken breasts.
Combine the Italian seasoning, salt, paprika, garlic powder, and pepper in a mixing bowl. In the Instant Pot, sprinkle over the chicken breasts.
Top with melted butter (no need to melt it, just toss it in!).
Put the lid on, turn the valve to sealing, and set the timer for 8 minutes on Pressure Cook or Manual. It will take around 10 minutes to build up the pressure and start counting down.
When the cooking time is over, allow the pressure to naturally relax for at least 10 minutes (or completely). Remove the chicken by opening the cover. Allow for a 5-minute rest before slicing.
If preferred, prepare a corn starch slurry (equal parts corn starch and water, about 1-2 teaspoons each) and combine it with the cooking liquids to produce a gravy to serve with the chicken. Simply set the Instant Pot to sauté and simmer until the sauce has thickened.
